Did you know that around 20.3 million people in the UK have at least one scar? That is roughly 38% of the population. Women, in particular, are more likely than men to develop noticeable scars, such as keloids or hypertrophic scars. In fact, research from the UK Biobank found that 65% of people with excessive scarring were women. Not to mention, a survey by Nourisil MD revealed that 14% of mothers think about their C-section scar several times a week, showing that concerns about scarring are far from uncommon.
And for those who have experienced acne, around 1 in 5 may develop some form of scarring. Of course, scars are a natural part of life, but they can still impact the way we perceive ourselves. At our UK-based clinic, we understand this and are here to help you feel more comfortable in your own skin.
Our clinic in Richmond is known for its reputation for always putting our patients first. This is because, at the heart of what we do, is you, your safety, and your satisfaction. During your consultation with one of our highly qualified medical professionals, we take the time to listen to your concerns and create a personalised treatment plan, whether that involves subcision or a combination treatment. This ensures you receive the best possible results.
Subcision is a highly effective treatment for reducing the appearance of scars (including depressed acne scars, rolling scars, acne or C-section scars), cellulite dimpling, and indentations caused by trauma or previous skin conditions. It works by stimulating natural collagen production, helping your skin regain a smoother, more even appearance.
During the procedure, one of our highly qualified doctors in London inserts a fine needle (like a Nokor needle or fine micro blunt cannula) beneath the skin and moves it in a fanning or sweeping motion to release fibrous bands of scar tissue that pull the skin downwards. Once these bands are broken, the skin can lift and appear smoother.
Mild swelling, bruising, or tenderness may occur for a few days afterwards, which is completely normal. Noticeable improvements in skin texture are typically seen within 4 to 6 weeks, with optimal results usually achieved after 2 to 3 sessions, depending on the severity of the scars.
For optimal healing, we recommend avoiding touching or massaging the treated area for 48 hours and skipping makeup for 24 to 48 hours if a subcision is performed on the face. It is also best to avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, and alcohol for 2 to 3 days, as well as to protect your skin from sun exposure by applying SPF 30 or higher daily.
Subcision is primarily used to treat atrophic (depressed) acne scars, particularly rolling scars, as well as depressed traumatic or surgical scars such as C-section scars. It is also effective for improving the appearance of cellulite and wrinkles or skin depressions caused by volume loss.
Yes. Subcision is often combined with other scar treatments such as Youlaser Skin Resurfacing, microneedling, and more. Especially since combination therapy can enhance results and effectively target different scar types. During your consultation, we will create a customised treatment plan based on your scar severity to ensure optimal results.
Subcision is generally safe for all skin types (Fitzpatrick I–VI). However, darker skin tones may require special post-care to minimise the risk of temporary pigmentation changes. At Bodyvie, we tailor the technique and aftercare to your individual needs and ensure you are fully informed both before and after your appointment.
Subcision may not be suitable for individuals with active acne or skin infections, blood clotting disorders, a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring, or uncontrolled diabetes that affects wound healing. However, at our clinic, we will review your medical history carefully before treatment to ensure it is safe and appropriate for you.
When performed correctly by an experienced practitioner, like our highly skilled medical professionals at Bodyvie, subcision rarely causes new scarring. However, improper technique, infection, or overly aggressive treatment can increase the risk, which is why the procedure should only be carried out by trained and qualified professionals.
